About Our Camps
About
Camp Judy Layne
“…As we sit around the campfire in the hills of Judy Layne, it is an honor
having been away, to come back here again…” The Camp Judy Layne song expresses
the feelings of CJL campers. Located in Morgan County, a short drive from Cave
Run Lake in the Daniel Boone National Forest, Camp Judy Layne’s adventure-based
opportunities abound in over 180 acres of woodland streams and beautiful cliffs.
Girls who attend Camp Judy Layne may sail, canoe, rappel, rock climb, hike,
challenge the teams course, stretch their creative imaginations or cook over a
campfire. Girl Scouts-Wilderness Road Council has made major improvements to CJL
including building a new dining hall, 2 cabin units, infirmary, boathouse,
low-ropes course and a bathhouse. One of the most popular amenities at camp is a
$25,000 climbing tower with zip line. Girls will benefit from the camp’s unique
program facilities and outstanding opportunities for a variety of activities.
The experiences offered at Camp Judy Layne are some of the finest available in
Central and Eastern Kentucky.
Camp Cardinal
“…a place where I can discover all that I can do, in the hills where trees grow
tall…” the Camp Cardinal song says it all. Beautiful Camp Cardinal is a place
where girls can discover new skills. Located in Carter County, a short hike from
Carter Caves State Park, Camp Cardinal offers a variety of unique experiences.
Campers can swim in the camp’s 40’x80’ pool, learn horsemanship skills at the
Camp Cardinal Equine Center, and experience caving at Carter Caves. A new
Program/Equine Center, and large swimming pool offers programs not available at
other area camps. The trails throughout the 156 acres of hills and tall trees
offer opportunities to observe the beauty of the woods on foot or by horseback.
Those lucky enough to come to Camp Cardinal, should come ready to have one of
the best summers of their lives!
Camp Traditions
Our Girl Scout camps have many traditions: Order of the Fork, The Golden Dust
Pan, The Gooney Bird, closing campfires, singing during meal cleanup, and flag
ceremonies. Campers returning for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th or more years will
have a special commemorative ceremony and recognition. Campers completing badges
at camp will receive that recognition at the end of the session.
