Girl Scouts: Healthy and Fit

When Juliette Gordon Low started the Girl Scout movement in 1912, she wanted to help girls grow into productive, self-reliant women.  She soon realized that in order to accomplish this goal; girls would need to be strong physically as well as mentally.

Early Girl Scout handbooks clearly reflect this vision.  The 1913 handbook contained practical information on everything from first aid to domestic arts.  The chapter on health stated, “To make yourself strong and healthy it is necessary to begin with your inside, and to get the blood into good order and the heart to work well; that is the secret of the whole thing, and physical exercise should be taken with that intention.”

Today’s Girl Scout resources are responding to the contemporary health needs of girls and continue the Girl Scouts’ emphasis on health.

TAGS – The Action Girl Scouts is an exciting resource for Troop Leaders to utilize at troop meetings that was distributed at the start of the 2005/2006 troop year.  This booklet focuses on topics that directly impact girls in their daily lives.  The primary goal of TAGS is to foster interest and the importance of health, fitness, nutrition and body image.  It is not too late to start the TAGS program and have your girls earn the TAGS patch.  Please ask your Membership Specialist or come into a Girl Scout office for your free copy of the TAGS booklet or download it below.

One important step in earning the TAGS patch is to keep a log of the physical exercises girls do each week.  The LOG ON form is divided into 15 weeks and each day is divided in half.  Girls may keep track of what they do and/or how long they do it.  For example: Some examples are roller skating for 1 hour or jumping rope for 15 minutes.  If girls have a pedometer they may also keep track of how many steps they take each day.

The requirements to earn the TAGS patch are included in the front of the TAGS booklet.  Each age level completes between 5 and 7 activities in the booklet from 4 different sections. Leaders are asked to do a pre test with girls before they start the program and a post test after the program is complete.   There is also a TAGS Activity Troop Summary Report that leaders should fill out and send to the council when the troop completes the TAGS patch.  This should be sent in to the council with the patch order.

The primary goal of TAGS is to increase girls’ interest in health, fitness, nutrition and self–image. The booklet is divided into sections, which include:

1. Nutrition and Healthy Eating

2. Sleep and Relaxation

3. Body Image

4. Fitness
