Caving Junior Girl Scout Badge OUR OWN COUNCIL RECOGNITION
Complete Six Requirements, including the three starred and either activity 4 or 5. You must complete activities 1, 2, and 3 before doing activity 4. (NOTE: You may do both 4 and 5 to complete two requirements.) *I. Learn how to dress properly to explore caves in your area. Know what types of clothing you should wear when taking a commercial walking tour and when exploring a noncommercial "Wild" cave. Demonstrate that you wear the proper clothing when you visit any cave. *2. Find out about the different types of light sources that cavers use when exploring caves. Know how many sources to carry at all times. Choose a light source that you will be taking into the cave with you and show that you know what to do if it stops working. Learn about the essential items a caver carries. Assemble your own "cave pack" to carry with you in caves. *3. Ask an experienced caver to talk to you about caving safety. Be able to answer the following questions: A. How many people do you have to have to go caving and why? B. Why do you always carry three light sources? C. What do you do if you get cold? D. What does it mean to always have three points of contact? E. Why should everyone be a "lazy caver?" 4. Visit a wild cave with an experienced caving group. It must be a cave that you have to provide your own light. 5. Learn about how your flashlight works. Practice taking your flashlight apart, changing the batteries, and changing the light bulb. 6. With your troop, go in a room with no windows and turn off the lights. Sit completely quiet for 1 minute to feel what it is like in a cave with no lights. After turning the lights back on, talk about your feelings about the dark. 7. Try on some caving equipment. Know why cavers dress the way they do or invite a caver to come to your troop meeting and show you his/her equipment.
